GPS time to UTC
For example, 1400000000 is Fri, May 17, 2024, 04:53:02 PM UTC, which is 2024-05-17T16:53:02.000Z in ISO 8601 and 1715964782 in Unix seconds.
Seconds since the GPS epoch, 1980-01-06T00:00:00Z. On the GPS time scale, which has no leap seconds, that is 2024-05-17 16:53:20. UTC was 18 seconds behind GPS on that date, so the result is 18 seconds earlier.

GPS time counts seconds from 6 January 1980 and, unlike UTC, never inserts leap seconds, so the two scales have drifted apart: UTC has been 18 seconds behind GPS since 1 January 2017. Receivers and NMEA logs report it as a plain second count or as a week number plus seconds into that week. Paste either form below, as 1400000000 or 2315:345600, and parsetime subtracts the leap seconds in force on that date to give you UTC.

Common questions
- What is the GPS epoch?
- Midnight UTC at the start of Sunday 6 January 1980, Unix timestamp 315964800. GPS seconds, week numbers and time of week all count from it.
- Why is GPS time 18 seconds ahead of UTC?
- GPS time runs at the atomic rate and ignores the leap seconds UTC inserts to track the Earth's rotation. Eighteen have been added since 1980, the last on 1 January 2017, so GPS reads 18 seconds later than UTC today. The converter applies the count that was in force on the decoded date, which is why GPS second 0 comes out as exactly 1980-01-06 00:00:00 UTC.
- How do I convert a GPS week and time of week?
- GPS seconds = week × 604800 + time of week, then Unix seconds = GPS seconds + 315964800 − leap seconds. Receivers that report a 10-bit week number wrap every 1024 weeks, most recently on 7 April 2019, so add 1024 or 2048 to a small week number if the date comes out decades early.
- Can I convert GPS time with the API?
- Yes: GET /api/t/1400000000?format=gps returns UTC as JSON, and /api/t/2315:345600?format=gps accepts the week form. No key or signup.
